Homœopathy is a complete system of medicine. Its aim is to stimulate your body to heal itself as gently and quickly as possible. Treatment is therefore of the individual person, not simply of the disease symptoms. It is suitable for physical and emotional complaints, because it sees you as a whole. It was developed during the late 18th and early 19th centuries by a German physician and pharmacist called Dr Samuel Hahnemann. In an effort to reduce the distressing side-effects of large doses of poisonous drugs, Dr Hahnemann tried to find the smallest quantity that would still be curative. He also reasoned that medicines should work with the immune system (i.e. mimicking the symptoms it produced) to stimulate it to heal itself. Licensed homœopaths undergo thorough professional training over a number of years, both in the principles and practice of homœopathy and in orthodox anatomy and physiology, pathology and disease. Because of this, they are able to recognise any signs that suggest you need referral elsewhere, and would advise you accordingly. Also, their training enables them to monitor your progress as you continue treatment under their care.
At the first appointment, your homœopath builds up as complete a picture of you as possible, so the initial consultation takes about 1½ hours. You may or may not be given the remedy immediately: each case is unique and some need careful and exacting research following the appointment before an accurate prescription can be made. At subsequent appointments, the practitioner determines your reaction to the remedy and decides what to do next to help you get better.
Therapy is non-invasive. Remedies are pleasant-tasting and non-toxic; they are free from side-effects and are not habit-forming. They can be taken alongside any other medicines you have from your medical doctor.
